THE CHURCH
SOMETIME ANYWHERE (ARISTA)
By Brad Webber
Shimmering guitar lines and druggy vocals swirl thourgh "Sometime Anywhere," the latest record by Church remnants, singer- bassist Steve Kilbey and guitarist Marty Willson-Piper. Peter Koppes recently left the Australian band that has been lurching about the cusp of commercial success since the mid-80s with stellar discs like "Heyday" and "Starfish." "Sometime Anywhere" does wallow a bit with Kilbey's tormented vocals and oblique lyrics - swimming amid Willson-Piper's neopsychedelic licks. "Eastern" sparkles with a Middle Eastern flair, with violins swirling in counterpoint to Willson-Piper's deft strumming. Snatch the two-disc version, which adds another half- hour of music for $1.
