Notes
The booklet contains this write-up about rage:
rage first entered the shadowy world of late night television in April 1987. With the arrival of 24 hour transmission, there was a deep, dark TV void that the ABC wanted filled.
ABC producer Mark Fitzgerald had rage in mind. His idea? An all night music video show which would play the video, the whole video and nothing but the video. No presenters, no distractions, no interruptions.
Well, virtually no interruptions. There were of course those distinctive r-r-r-r-r-r-r-rage screams which - love them or hate them - seem to have become part of our collective subconscious.
With the arrival of rage, an Australian tradition developed. It's a tradition of bleary-eyed Australians sitting on their couches at 4:00 a.m. thinking "I'll just watch one more, then I'm going to bed... Just one more... Just one more...."
The guest programmers entered rage's late night landscape in 1990. Mark Fitzgerald, producer/programmer Stephanie Lewis, and musician Damien Lovelock had thrown the idea around for a while. In January 1990 the idea finally hit the screen.
rage guest programmers were handed the show for a night. They would host rage, choose all the music and explain their choices. It was a concept that went against the idea of interruption-free music videos, but guest programmers seemed an interruption worth having.
Among the first to sit in the rage guest programmer couch were Amanda Brown from the Go Betweens, Andrew Denton, Kate Ceberano, Alannah Russack from The Hummingbirds, Ed Kuepper (The Saints, Laughing Clowns), Mark Seymour from Hunters & Collectors, and the first international guest programmer, Mike Patton from Faith No More.
The List of those who've programmed rage includes Nick Cave, Tex Perkins, Michael Hutchence, Paul Kelly, Crowded House, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters & Nirvana), Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam & Brad), The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction & Porno For Pyros), Frank Black, The Breeders, Beck, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Ice-T, De La Soul, Michael Franti (Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy & Spearhead), The Prodigy, Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry, k.d. lang, Chris Isaak, Kylie Minogue, Everything But The Girl, Elastica, Radiohead, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Jesus Jones, Pop Will Eat Itself, Primal Scream, Ian Astbury (The Cult), Mick Jones (The Clash & Big Audio Dynamite II), Ray Manzarek (The Doors), Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Metallica, Sepultura, Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Alice In Chains, Ministry, Helmet, Tool, Primus, Henry Rollins, Alice Cooper, Malcolm McLaren, Tiny Tim, Ru Paul, Devo, Stan Ridgway (Wall Of Voodoo), Everclear, Korn, Hole, L7, Lydia Lunch, Living Colour, Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies, Slash (Guns 'n' Roses), Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), Mundawuy Yunupingu (Yothu Yindi), Dave Graney & Clare Moore, Robert Forster, Stephen Cummings, Ken Gormly & James Cruickshank (The Cruel Sea), Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Barry Adamson, The Dirty Three, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, You Am I, silverchair, Grinspoon, Regurgitator, Powderfinger, Jebediah, The Fauves, Custard, The Whitlams, Spiderbait, Tumbleweed, Magic Dirt, T.I.S.M., Ratcat, Mental As Anything, Jimmy Barnes, Billy Thorpe, Christina Amphlett (The Divinyls), Deborah Conway, Fiona Horne (Def Fx), Shirley Manson & Butch Vig (Garbage), Green Day, Pavement, Ween, Weezer, Evan Dando (The Lemonheads), The Violent Femmes, Veruca Salt, Faith No More, Bush, Ash, Ben Folds Five, Live, R.E.M. and many others.
Since 1990, rage has been asking influential musicians to choose the music which has most influenced them. Certain songs just kept appearing on their guest lists. Not surprisingly, they were often songs with great videos, but they were more than that. They were important, beautiful, powerful, inventive, groundbreaking songs.
In early 1998 we decided to look back at the programming lists and collect a list of the songs most chosen. We've put them together for this - our first ever rage album.
The rage album opens with Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" which, along with The Saints "(I'm) Stranded", has endured as one of the absolutely most chosen rage songs. Enjoy it and then just listen to one more song, then just one more, then just one more....
