THE CHURCH
Conception
CARRERE CAL229 LP/Cass/CD

Conception is a 10-strong compilation of material from The Church's early albums. The Church, Blurred Crusade and the EP Sing Songs. The pick of the tracks are characterised by a brazenly derivative style which suggests that in their formative years originality was not the Aussies' strong point. When You Were Mine thunders along like a bastard offspring of The Psychedelic Furs' India. Just For You is marked by its similarity to Steve Harley's Make Me Smile and Is This Where You Live highlights a guitar solo plundered from Hendrix's Castles Made Of Sand. Only one track, To Be In Your Eyes—a gentle sway of melancholy featuring Peter Koppes' elegant guitar work—stands on its own merit. Unlikely to woo the non-believer. ★★ (2 stars)

I have just a few Church releases, but this one is probably the one I would suggest to anyone who never listened to the band. The opening track turns me on every time I listen to it. Great old new wave!

Ciao!
