Under The Milky Way: The Best of The Church
by The Church
REVIEWS and COMMENTS
The latter half of 1999 saw the release of two Church comps. What's going on? More to the point, what do you get?
The US collection on Buddha (BMG reissue label) contains 17 tracks following the band's career chronologically from Unguarded Moment to Two Places at Once. All the songs are digitally remastered, and there's a neat booklet containing photos and liner notes. While the choice of material is predictable, the package at least looks like some thought went into it. Only Tim has to contend with surname mis-spelling. Marty got off light! As a bonus for collectors, the set also includes the single remixes of Ripple and Feel, plus the radio edit of Two Places at Once. A cool collection despite the inappropriate upside down titling.....
Completists get both, but here we have two more additions with which to turn on a friend...Spread the word....
For the newbies this is a good introduction into The Church's world. The CD has also an extensive and very interesting essay about the band's history from their first album till "Sometime Anywhere". A pity there is no song from "Magician Among The Spirits" and "Hologram Of Baal" which were released before this collection. "Comedown" and "Louisiana" would have fit perfectly on it. Anyway, it's impossible to make a perfect "Best Of" from this band, because you immediately have to dig into the regular albums. The Church is the best inversion when we are talking about rock music.
