Notes

The Missing Sleeve Notes by Dare Mason.

From Marty's Website: "It's an eclectic bunch of songs which are written by both Dare and myself I wrote the lyrics and sing all but one which Dare sings. We both play guitar and bass. He also plays keys and operated the the big and small machines, mixed it and did a lot of hard work being the producer and getting lots of his arty friends to play all kinds of strange instruments that we aren't that good at like cello, recorder and proper drums. We thought it would be rather nice to collaborate on an album together from the beginning. I have usually written the songs and Dare has been the glue and polish but we thought on this one we would call it something and start from scratch."

Sparks Lane is a road in Wirral, England, near Liverpool, which connected the childhood homes of Marty and Dare.

Marty said this about the cover:

The cover art by the late Greg Daville was composite images put together to form an unlikely reality. The device featured in the picture is called an orrery and is a real thing, a working mechanical model of our solar system.

Notes

The first 500 pre-orders of the original received three bonus download tracks: the album track "Better Hope You're Not Alone," and two non-album tracks "Turn The Dial And Scream" and "The Fugitive". On "Turn The Dial And Scream" and "The Fugitive" Dare and Marty each sing their own lyrics and vocal melody over the same musical backing.

The working title for this album was "Modeste."

From the 2024 Vinyl Release Announcement:

We all know that CDs were often too long and we were happy for the restrictions that vinyl gave to your favourite albums, so it will be reordered and we have culled the two instrumentals, the short title track as well as New Scientist, and the punky Mao Tse Tung Kiss for what seems like a more concise record.

Notes

This is the first single from Noctorum's fourth album The Afterlife.

Marty's write-up:

The first track aired from the new album is A Girl With No Love. Comical in its despair, the song explores the emotions of and options against physical loneliness in a world where, surrounded with many choices, one can find themselves not just alone with their thoughts but with the incessant pressing pain of nature's physical needs. In removing the complicated social etiquette, the compromise, the personality, the perceived trouble involved, the cost - this one time expense might adequately satisfy that nature in a world where communication skills, empathy and love are lost in a lonely room full of blind sentient beings that are unable to connect, unable to trust and are doomed or blessed to an eternity of fantasy.

This is from a review by Dave Franklin at Dancing About Architecture:

And A Girl With No Love is just another example of how well MW-P does indeed know his way around a song. Bristling with energy and rock and roll groove but retaining that slight psychedelic infusion that served his formative band so well, it is that trade off between its underground nature and hooky accessibility that will see it pick up fans across the spectrum. And whereas most people would be happy to just motor through such a well-conceived tune, the charm here is the addition of some ethereal dynamic drops which make the foot-on-the-monitor highs all the more effective.

Notes

This is the second single from Noctorum's fourth album The Afterlife.

Marty's write-up:

I've lived or spent long periods of time in many cities in the world. From Liverpool and Manchester as a young man to Madrid and Berlin as I grew. Before moving to Stockholm for a few years, I lived in Sydney and later New York. I have been lucky to enjoy Amsterdam, San Francisco and Los Angeles as a musician in the studio, spending many months getting to know these cities. Over the years (in the seventies and the late nineties) I lived in different parts of London, mainly in the West - Ealing, North Acton, West Kensington and Ladbroke Grove, with a stint in Finchley in the North of the city.

Perhaps city-living is by definition a difficult slog - high rents, a constant pressure to earn, an uphill battle that traps you in a vicious circle that has you so focussed on the job of survival that your aspirations, your dreams, are swept aside, pushed out of reach as all your waking hours are spent treading water, your imagination drowning, your ideas lost in the rush hour.

Piccadilly Circus In The Rain addresses the struggle and questions the romantic notion of London as a cultural melting pot - music, galleries, nightlife, history, energy, red double decker buses, unarmed friendly Bobbies, the cover of Abbey Road and the Queen. Singling out this city is purely coincidental but in truth, for most people with artistic tendencies "London brings you to your knees".

Review in The Big Takeover:

Piccadilly Circus In The Rain is a breath of fresh air with just the right mix of upbeat instrumentation and an attractive tandem of male and female vocals. Gentle, mellifluous guitar lines are whisked about by a brisk drum beat, while Willson-Piper's sweetly soft and fluid vocals offer up a bittersweet portrait of Londontown. He's echoed at times by airy female vocal accompaniment and bright brass notes, and always lifted up by a light dance of piano keys. The track is superb and stands up to anything ever released by The Church or All About Eve.

This is from a review by Dave Franklin at Dancing About Architecture:

To those of us who don't live in big cities, whose surroundings are more suburban, small town or rural, there is something intriguing, possibly slightly otherworldly, about life in the metropolis. Those extremes of the wealth and destitution, the clashes of culture and creed, the hustle and the loneliness, the bright lights and the dark secrets. As someone who has lived all over London in particular and in similar places across the world, Marty-Wilson Piper's ode to city life is both well observed and poetic.

Joined as always by his Noctorum partner Dare Mason, the duo, augmented by some emotive trumpet and rich backing vocals, have created a wonderful soundtrack to the highs and lows of living in the urban sprawl. Just as the cover artwork is a blend of the dark and the day-glo, so the nature of the lyrics covers the same dichotomy and musically runs along some shimmering and subtle guitar lines and gorgeous sonic textures.

Notes

This is the third single from Noctorum's fourth album The Afterlife.

Marty's write-up:

The opening song from Noctorum's fourth album THE AFTERLIFE is The Moon Drips, a perilous journey on a mysterious caravan that takes the unwitting across the Texan-Mexican border to a geographically impossible jump, landing in Bohemia and Prussia. As these two worlds collide, winds howl, trumpets blast, violins yearn and 19th century sequencers outmode harpsichords as creatures of the night fly silhouetted against the glowing disc of the moon, a backdrop for realised shadows as they pounce on reality itself.

Notes

This album was made available on gatefold vinyl, CD and digital download to PledgeMusic contributors in mid-November 2018. Pledgers could choose either signed or unsigned copies of the LP and CD versions. The official release date for this album was February 15, 2019.

PledgeMusic declared bankrupcy before paying out all the money raised for the album, leaving the band and Schoolkids Records over $14,000 in the red. To help recoup the losses the band decided to digitally release the companion piece, The Afterdeath EP (see below).

Notes

Marty wrote about this album on August 1, 2019.

This is from the "Dancing With Death" review by Ryan Martin at Jammerzine:

I have long called Marty Willson-Piper a 'riff-master' on the guitar. And right from the start of 'Dancing With Death' from the new 'The Afterdeath EP', he does not disappoint. The is a modern guitar showcase. Yet, as the listening progresses, you realize that this is a song that builds the momentum as it climbs with layers upon layers of sonic textures that sifts and sways along in multiple directions that most musicians would fail to guess but realize, after the fact, that everything in the music makes sense and you're left to ponder the fact that you just sat through a 4+ minute lesson in songwriting.

Notes

"Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" was The Buffalo Springfield's debut single in July, 1966. It was written by Neil Young six months earlier, and was the first song the band ever rehearsed. Initially intended as the B-side, "Clancy" was flipped at the last minute, relegating Stephen Stills' "Go And Say Goodbye" to the backside. The single was a relative failure, making little impact outside of L.A., and only reaching #110 on the Billboard charts. The song appeared on their debut album "Buffalo Springfield" in October, 1966.
